Don’t know why we haven’t been up here before: it’s a stunningly beautiful area of open alpine slopes, blue-green lakes and tarns and views galore.
And we (us and Merewyn) pretty much had it to ourselves. Apart from the bazillion hungry mosquitoes. We were lulled into a false sense of security on the approach and for much of the first day, but come dinner time…
Saturday we hiked in to Lower Marriott lake and camped on a little grassy peninsula before exploring further up the valley to the Wendy Thompson hut and tarns beyond. Sunday we went up to Rohr Lake and towards Mt Rohr. Snow and time prevented us from summitting but we had a great view from our turnaround point.
Back at the car we were set upon by twenty bazillion mosquitoes as we changed into clean clothes. It would have been quite funny to watch three people dancing about trying to remove hiking gear, slap mosquitoes, put on clean clothes, slap more mosquitoes… had it not been for the mosquitoes.
And quite by chance, our Flickr contact Jen was up there the same day, though our paths never crossed :-)
