Garibaldi Lake, 22 Jan 2023

15 Mar 20238 Mar 2023 ~ AndyG ~ Leave a comment

Opinion: Normally I find this trail to be quite easy and enjoyable but some days your body lets you know just how many switchbacks there are between the trailhead and the first place with a view. (The answer is too many!) It's definitely a trail that requires perseverance, especially in the snow. But seeing everything … Continue reading Garibaldi Lake, 22 Jan 2023

Hollyburn Mountain, 18 Feb 2023

22 Feb 202321 Feb 2023 ~ AndyG ~ Leave a comment

Opinion: A great destination when short of time, Hollyburn is ideal for a quick workout and I think it has some of the nicest trees on the North Shore when they're covered in snow. Heading up later in the day avoids the crowds too. Fact We had no issues parking along the road leading to … Continue reading Hollyburn Mountain, 18 Feb 2023

Pump Peak, 14 Jan 2023

20 Jan 202324 Feb 2023 ~ AndyG ~ Leave a comment

Opinion: Mount Seymour is a fitting place to kick off our 2023 hiking season, especially to catch the sunset on a fine afternoon. Care is needed to stay on the trail when descending in the dark but the opportunity to see the city lights and a sky full of stars makes it worthwhile. Fact Day … Continue reading Pump Peak, 14 Jan 2023

Hollyburn Mountain, 11 Dec 2022

13 Dec 202213 Dec 2022 ~ AndyG ~ 1 Comment

Opinion: It's only been a fortnight since we were last up here but a lot can happen in that time in winter. Fresh snow always transforms even a familiar hike into a fun adventure. Early starts are mandatory for optimum peace and the best snow, although we got lucky today with our more leisurely timing … Continue reading Hollyburn Mountain, 11 Dec 2022

Tim Jones Peak, 9 Jan 2022

17 Feb 202216 Feb 2022 ~ AndyG ~ 5 Comments

Opinion: Where else do you go on a sunny winter's day? Today's trip to Mount Seymour only reinforced my opinion that it is the best North Shore peak to visit in the winter, especially on a sunny, clear day after a major storm. Of course, many other people think that too so it's not a … Continue reading Tim Jones Peak, 9 Jan 2022

St Marks Summit, 29 Jan 2022

13 Feb 202212 Feb 2022 ~ AndyG ~ 5 Comments

Opinion: Possibly my least-favourite North Shore hike, at least in the summer. But when the snow is right and the weather isn't good enough to tempt you up to a better summit, it can be a fine way to get some fresh air and exercise with a pretty good view at the end. However, I … Continue reading St Marks Summit, 29 Jan 2022

Dog Mountain, 15 Jan 2022

20 Jan 202220 Jan 2022 ~ AndyG ~ 6 Comments

Opinion: Well, the snow was terrible and the trail was crowded but we managed to find some quiet moments and spent some much-needed time in unexpected sunshine. Despite its modest stats, it's still a workout with all the ups and downs in each direction, and the view is great. The biggest downside is the long … Continue reading Dog Mountain, 15 Jan 2022

Dam Mountain and Thunderbird Ridge (via BCMC Trail), 17 Apr 2021

23 Apr 2021 ~ AndyG ~ 6 Comments

Opinion: Do not do this trail right now as the snow is a slushy mess, and microspikes don't help. The BCMC was better than expected thanks to recent upgrades that have significantly improved the first quarter of the ascent. However, having said all that, the views were pretty darn nice and almost made us forget … Continue reading Dam Mountain and Thunderbird Ridge (via BCMC Trail), 17 Apr 2021

Hollyburn Mountain, 7 Feb 2021

18 Mar 202118 Mar 2021 ~ AndyG ~ 2 Comments

Opinion: Another sunny morning, another early dash up Hollyburn to feel alive. We didn't even mind the extra walk from the backcountry parking lot, although it turned out to be unnecessary. Fact: Let's start by clarifying the parking situation. Parking is free along the Cypress Bowl Road, where there is just enough space to pull … Continue reading Hollyburn Mountain, 7 Feb 2021

Hollyburn Mountain, 24 Dec 2020

12 Feb 202115 Feb 2021 ~ AndyG ~ 2 Comments

Opinion: What, Hollyburn again? What can I say? It's a nice little hike, not too long and not too tough, and easy to keep your distance from potential disease carriers. Parking is terrible unless you go early or late: there have been long line-ups to get up to the ski resort on recent fine days. … Continue reading Hollyburn Mountain, 24 Dec 2020

Looking forward to the summer hiking season and following the lifecycle of my favourite flowers, such as Western anemone, from pushing up through the snow to its fluffy finale.
Mountain reflections - a handful of nice views from 2022 seen in the South Chilcotins and the Canadian Rockies.
Those brief moments of golden sunshine make the hike all the more worthwhile.
Last weekend was a long weekend (at least for some of us) and of course the weather lived up to its reputation, giving us a sunny day on Tuesday. But there was a short window of fine weather on Saturday afternoon and we made a beeline for Hollyburn Mountain to catch the views.
A selection of recent beach scenes that make me glad to live by the sea, all taken within the past week.
Happy Mountain Monday! A selection of mountain photos from our trip to Garibaldi Lake a few weeks ago.
