Elfin Lakes, 2 Oct 2016

10 Jan 201718 Nov 2018 ~ AndyG ~ Leave a comment

Opinion In 12 years I've hiked this trail 10 times so I must like it :-) I'm actually kinda torn - it does have great scenery, and it's not too tough, but it's far from my favourite hike. Having said that, I think there are two times in the year where it's a really enjoyable … Continue reading Elfin Lakes, 2 Oct 2016

Brandywine Mountain, 30 Sep 2016

4 Nov 201619 Dec 2016 ~ AndyG ~ Leave a comment

Opinion Brandywine has quickly become one of my favourite summits. It's a great mix of easy hiking and more challenging boulder-hopping with some steep terrain and a bit of route-finding thrown in for good measure. And then there are the stunning views. Mountains, glaciers, meadows, lakes... Definitely a hike to save for a sunny day, … Continue reading Brandywine Mountain, 30 Sep 2016

Yak Peak, 23 Aug 2016

25 Aug 20161 Sep 2019 ~ AndyG ~ Leave a comment

Opinion Well, this might just be a summer of surprises - this hike was much more enjoyable than expected. I was prepared for a boring little grunt up the slope (a la Grouse Grind) but the trail was varied and interesting, and yielded great views pretty quickly that never let up. Sure, it was definitely … Continue reading Yak Peak, 23 Aug 2016

Elk-Thurston, 31 May 2016

8 Jun 201615 Jul 2016 ~ AndyG ~ Leave a comment

Opinion Today I realized that this is close to being the perfect summer hike with grand views and an extensive display of wildflowers. To see so many flowers blooming in the subalpine at the end of May was a real treat. It's a bit of a grunt getting up above the trees but after that … Continue reading Elk-Thurston, 31 May 2016

Tunnel Bluffs, 19 Mar 2016

28 Mar 201613 Oct 2018 ~ AndyG ~ Leave a comment

Opinion Nearly six years since I first (and last) hiked to Tunnel Bluffs I see that much has changed up there. Popularity has not been kind to the bluffs. Sadly the bed of moss that used to cover the rocks has almost completely gone :-( and of course there are now multiple fire rings. I … Continue reading Tunnel Bluffs, 19 Mar 2016

Zoa Peak, 11 Jun 2015

11 Jun 201513 Jun 2016 ~ AndyG ~ Leave a comment

A lovely mid-week excursion on a fine trail. This hike was nicer than I remembered, maybe because I knew what to expect and I wasn't anticipating the winter-time views. Three of us meandered our way up to the summit at a leisurely pace, still making it up there in only 1h 40m. As we got … Continue reading Zoa Peak, 11 Jun 2015

Mount Strachan, 4 Jun 2015

4 Jun 201522 Feb 2021 ~ AndyG ~ Leave a comment

A very peaceful and completely view-free hike on a cloudy day. No matter - the beauty of the forest and the flowers kept our attention from start to finish. We walked past Yew Lake to the HSCT as far as Strachan Meadows, then Christmas Gully up to the north summit (lunch). From there we went … Continue reading Mount Strachan, 4 Jun 2015

Greendrop Lake, 20 May 2015

20 May 201513 Jun 2016 ~ AndyG ~ Leave a comment

Third time to Greendrop Lake, third time it rained on me :-) At least today it was only a sprinkle, with the main thunderstorm passing us by. Lindeman Lake looked stunning in bright sunshine, which meant it was baking hot out on the boulder fields. We were glad of the cloud cover on the return … Continue reading Greendrop Lake, 20 May 2015

Norvan Falls, 9 Apr 2015

9 Apr 201513 Jun 2016 ~ AndyG ~ Leave a comment

Another sunny day in Lynn Headwaters. The sunshine in the forest was really very cheery, and despite cool temperatures, spring is definitely here. The waterfall made a nice destination, although in reality this was a day for getting up onto a summit. This hike was the very first trip I organized through Wanderung in April … Continue reading Norvan Falls, 9 Apr 2015

The Chief, 18 Mar 2015

18 Mar 201513 Jun 2016 ~ AndyG ~ Leave a comment

Today's hike celebrated ten years since I first hiked the Chief, almost to the day. The weather conditions almost matched those of a decade ago, albeit slightly cloudier with the summits of the Sky Pilot group and Garibaldi shrouded in cloud all day. I called out this hike through Wanderung and was joined by Eddie … Continue reading The Chief, 18 Mar 2015

Possibly our closest bear encounter yet - we were less than 10 metres from the bear at its closest - this young black bear was far too comfortable around a large crowd of hikers.
Do you like coralroot? Swipe for more. And more. There were so many in bloom it was hard to know which ones to stop and photograph...
I need to spend more time in places like this...
Magnificent Mount Assiniboine with sunlit golden larches.
A band of blue.
Cone Mountain in Banff National Park, as seen on our first day of backpacking to Mount Assiniboine back in September 2019. A dull, sometime drizzly, but very peaceful 17 km of hiking to our first campground. It felt so good to be back in the Rockies for the first time in 6 years!
