Elk Mountain, 1 Nov 2020

3 Nov 20205 Nov 2020 ~ AndyG ~ 2 Comments

Opinion An excellent hike for a clear sunny day, even out of flower season. The trail is steep in places but mostly enjoyable hiking, with open forest and great views of the jagged peaks of the North Cascades in one direction and the Coast Mountains in the other. Not a hike for solitude, but it … Continue reading Elk Mountain, 1 Nov 2020

Elk-Thurston, 1 Jun 2019

8 Jun 20198 Jun 2019 ~ AndyG ~ Leave a comment

Opinion It's a steep grind to get to that first rewarding view on Elk, but it only gets better after that with stunning views and immense wildflower displays. Going to Thurston is not to be done for the views, but the trail is quite wonderful and of course there are plenty of glacier lilies at … Continue reading Elk-Thurston, 1 Jun 2019

Elk-Thurston, 31 May 2016

Opinion Today I realized that this is close to being the perfect summer hike with grand views and an extensive display of wildflowers. To see so many flowers blooming in the subalpine at the end of May was a real treat. It's a bit of a grunt getting up above the trees but after that … Continue reading Elk-Thurston, 31 May 2016

Greendrop Lake, 20 May 2015

20 May 201513 Jun 2016 ~ AndyG ~ Leave a comment

Third time to Greendrop Lake, third time it rained on me :-) At least today it was only a sprinkle, with the main thunderstorm passing us by. Lindeman Lake looked stunning in bright sunshine, which meant it was baking hot out on the boulder fields. We were glad of the cloud cover on the return … Continue reading Greendrop Lake, 20 May 2015

Vedder Ridge, 29 Mar 2009

It's that time of the month again. No, not that time; time for Andrew and Merewyn to find a lake to jump in. We'd decided on Cultus Lake, near Chilliwack, and picked our hike to be Vedder Mountain Ridge since Maria and I hadn't done it before. We'd tried it once before but gave up … Continue reading Vedder Ridge, 29 Mar 2009

Of Elks and Dogs, 7 Feb 2009

7 Feb 2009 ~ AndyG ~ Leave a comment

A fine sunny day in February and we wanted some big views. Andrew hadn't been up Elk Mtn in the winter and we wanted to return after we'd had a great day out last February, so we took a break from the North Shore and headed out east to Chilliwack. We parked up, slung our … Continue reading Of Elks and Dogs, 7 Feb 2009

Elk Mountain, 17 Feb 2008

17 Feb 2008 ~ AndyG ~ Leave a comment

A fantastic blue-sky day! Five of us headed out Chilliwack way and headed for the open ridge-top of Elk Mountain. This is a superb summer hike with all the wild flowers and glorious views – now to try it in winter to experience the bug-free version! We parked up on the icy snow at the … Continue reading Elk Mountain, 17 Feb 2008

Flora Lake, 13 Oct 2007

13 Oct 2007 ~ AndyG ~ Leave a comment

We'd been eyeing up this trail for a while, so a fine weekend in October gave us the perfect excuse to call it out and head out with Alena and Katherine, fellow hikers from Wanderung. We parked up at the Post Creek trailhead and set off, initially as if we were heading for Lindeman and … Continue reading Flora Lake, 13 Oct 2007

A celebration of trees for this #ForestFriday
Mother Nature knows what month it is - Happy Pride Month!
Last weekend's tour of the waterfalls of Gold Creek was a delightfully peaceful and atmospheric wander through extreme green forest with the first of the spring flowers beginning to show. Apart from the thundering waterfalls, that is.
A selection of fawn lilies for #FawnLilyFriday - white fawn lilies from Salt Spring Island and pink fawn lilies from UBC.
A long weekend on Salt Spring Island offered up the pinkest of treats with more fairyslipper (calypso) orchids blooming than we've ever seen before. Absolutely stunning!
Looking forward to the summer hiking season and following the lifecycle of my favourite flowers, such as Western anemone, from pushing up through the snow to its fluffy finale.
