Another weekend had come to an end, and without having ventured out on a hike, we both needed a dose of nature to top up our senses before plunging into the busyness of a working week. Lighthouse Park almost always fits the bill for a place that feels a little wild - wild enough to … Continue reading Vignette: Lighthouse Park, 1 May 2022

Photo essay: fawn lilies in Lighthouse Park

It's that time of year again when the white fawn lilies (Erythronium oregonum) are blooming and I've been coming to Lighthouse Park every year but two since 2012 to see and photograph them. My favourite place to view the lilies is at Eagle Point, easily reached at the southern end of the Valley of the … Continue reading Photo essay: fawn lilies in Lighthouse Park

Seeking - and finding - tranquility on a sometime rainy day I expected the park to be busier, but the threat of rain kept the crowds away so we had a delightful couple of hours checking out the usual viewpoints and exploring a couple of new ones, at least until the rain caught up with … Continue reading Vignette: Lighthouse Park, 25 Apr 2021

Opinion Always a delight, especially after a couple of months of mostly urban walks. Today was a good day to return to Lighthouse Park, despite the rain, as the forest flowers were blooming nicely. If you want peace and quiet, go early on a dull, rainy day but even then expect more people to show … Continue reading Lighthouse Park, 16 May 2020

Possibly our closest bear encounter yet - we were less than 10 metres from the bear at its closest - this young black bear was far too comfortable around a large crowd of hikers.
Do you like coralroot? Swipe for more. And more. There were so many in bloom it was hard to know which ones to stop and photograph...
I need to spend more time in places like this...
Magnificent Mount Assiniboine with sunlit golden larches.
A band of blue.
Cone Mountain in Banff National Park, as seen on our first day of backpacking to Mount Assiniboine back in September 2019. A dull, sometime drizzly, but very peaceful 17 km of hiking to our first campground. It felt so good to be back in the Rockies for the first time in 6 years!
