Pump Peak, 14 Jan 2023

20 Jan 202320 Jan 2023 ~ AndyG ~ Leave a comment

Opinion: Mount Seymour is a fitting place to kick off our 2023 hiking season, especially to catch the sunset on a fine afternoon. Care is needed to stay on the trail when descending in the dark but the opportunity to see the city lights and a sky full of stars makes it worthwhile. Fact Day … Continue reading Pump Peak, 14 Jan 2023

Being Outdoors, January 2023

Welcome to a new year! 2022 seemed to pass so quickly... Hope you all had a peaceful and relaxing holiday season and that 2023 brings many great adventures! If we were being outdoors today I'd be looking longingly at the North Shore mountains as it's been a few weeks since we were last up there … Continue reading Being Outdoors, January 2023

Mount Elsay, 27 Aug 2022

2 Sep 2022 ~ AndyG ~ 5 Comments

Opinion: This was not a fun hike. "Rocks, roots, and misery" was our tagline. True, we picked a bad day to do it, hoping the clouds would lift but they never did. We also did it as an out and back ensuring we were subjected to the gruelling ascents and descents in each direction. I … Continue reading Mount Elsay, 27 Aug 2022

Tim Jones Peak, 9 Jan 2022

17 Feb 202216 Feb 2022 ~ AndyG ~ 5 Comments

Opinion: Where else do you go on a sunny winter's day? Today's trip to Mount Seymour only reinforced my opinion that it is the best North Shore peak to visit in the winter, especially on a sunny, clear day after a major storm. Of course, many other people think that too so it's not a … Continue reading Tim Jones Peak, 9 Jan 2022

Dog Mountain, 15 Jan 2022

20 Jan 202220 Jan 2022 ~ AndyG ~ 6 Comments

Opinion: Well, the snow was terrible and the trail was crowded but we managed to find some quiet moments and spent some much-needed time in unexpected sunshine. Despite its modest stats, it's still a workout with all the ups and downs in each direction, and the view is great. The biggest downside is the long … Continue reading Dog Mountain, 15 Jan 2022

Tim Jones Peak, 23 Jan 2021

24 Jan 20214 Feb 2021 ~ AndyG ~ 4 Comments

Opinion With the most time above the trees, Mount Seymour is simply the best of the North Shore mountains in winter, especially on a bluebird day like today. The price is, of course, popularity so getting a parking spot requires a very early start, and when the conditions are right, venturing beyond Pump Peak to … Continue reading Tim Jones Peak, 23 Jan 2021

Mount Seymour (First Peak), 28 Nov 2020

29 Nov 2020 ~ AndyG ~ Leave a comment

Opinion With its true subalpine feel Mount Seymour remains my favourite North Shore peak, and watching a winter sunset from First Peak is a wonderful spectacle. It's busy, though, so don't expect solitude, and it will soon be even busier. Fact The ski resort was not yet open, so finding a parking spot was much … Continue reading Mount Seymour (First Peak), 28 Nov 2020

Mount Seymour, 4 Nov 2018

10 Dec 2018 ~ AndyG ~ 2 Comments

Opinion Always a fine destination for a short-ish hike, the first peak of Mount Seymour is one of my favourite North Shore summits. It's a great shoulder-season hike now all the bugs have gone, but it's not a place to expect solitude, even at this time of year. Fact We went as far as the … Continue reading Mount Seymour, 4 Nov 2018

Suicide Bluffs, 13 Oct 2018

13 Oct 201814 Oct 2018 ~ AndyG ~ Leave a comment

Opinion Perhaps the nicest trail on the North Shore, but don't tell anyone I said that. The first part to Dog Mountain remains a mess of roots and mud (as well as crowds of hikers), but once onto the Bluffs trail proper it is an absolute delight. But that doesn't mean it's easy: there's a … Continue reading Suicide Bluffs, 13 Oct 2018

Mount Seymour (First Peak), 15 Jan 2017

17 Jan 201715 Feb 2021 ~ AndyG ~ Leave a comment

Opinion: What? Mt Seymour again? Well, this time we had to do battle with the hordes and barely succeeded - we got one of the last spots in the overnight parking lot (P5). Was it worth it? Overall, yes though perhaps not for everyone. Having to park nearly 2 km from the trailhead seems like … Continue reading Mount Seymour (First Peak), 15 Jan 2017

A selection of quieter, atmospheric images taken on my bike rides into work during January. Nothing spectacular but they all speak to me in some way.
A starry Saturday night on Mount Seymour. An afternoon hike saw us catching a hazy sunset from the summit and then being entranced by the stars and planets on show as we made our way back down. We paused awhile at Brockton Point to trace the constellations and take some photos, the best of which is shown here. Or at least part of it: swipe for a different part of the scene and the full photo.
It's all a matter of perspective...

It's taken me months but I've finally written up the summary of our superb week of backpacking in the South Chilcotin mountains - link in bio.
